Before meaningful policy change can happen, we need clarity — about the problems we face, the barriers to progress, and the solutions that already exist. That’s why I launched a collaborative discussion process with leading stakeholders from healthcare, research, industry, and public institutions across the DACH region. The result: a comprehensive discussion paper that lays the groundwork for our latest whitepaper.
Why this study?
Health data is one of the most underused strategic assets in modern healthcare. Despite decades of digitisation, most systems still lack true interoperability, secure data access, and aligned governance frameworks. We knew it was time to bring people together and ask: what’s really blocking progress? And what do we need to prioritise, collectively, to move forward?
How we approached it:
- We conducted qualitative interviews with 20+ experts from different parts of the ecosystem – including hospitals, health insurers, regulatory bodies, startups, and digital health pioneers.
- These insights were then structured into thematic focus areas: financing, interoperability, cybersecurity, digital identities, data governance, and more.
- Finally, we invited participants to a moderated roundtable in Berlin to reflect, debate, and sharpen key positions.
The result is a discussion paper that serves as both a reflection of the current state and a strategic agenda-setting tool. It informed the development of the more comprehensive whitepaper “Zeitenwende für Gesundheitsdaten” — but it also stands on its own as a clear-eyed summary of the most pressing challenges and opportunities ahead.
What you’ll find in the discussion paper:
- An overview of the current digital health landscape in Germany and Europe
- Summarised expert insights and areas of consensus
- Key questions for further debate and policy design
- Early recommendations for digital governance, data infrastructure and stakeholder alignment
Final thought:
Real change starts with shared understanding. This discussion paper is an invitation to all healthcare leaders and policy professionals who want to be part of that change — by turning insight into impact.
